I’ll Never Be All Grown-Up

Comments Off 05 May 2011

By Jodi Murphy

I’ve been thinking about being a mother lately. You see, my life is about to change…my baby girl is going to graduate from college! It marks an end and a new beginning for her…and me. My daughter Molly describes it best: “It’s both exciting and terrifying!”

I woke up this morning and remembered a card that my mother sent to me after my son, Jonathan (my first!), was born. It’s been tucked away in a dusty file cabinet in our attic for 25 years, and it took me less than two minutes to find it! Could it be that I was meant to read and reflect on its meaning once again? She enclosed a poem from an unknown author with the handwritten message…”Jodi, This poem says it all for me. Love, Mom.”

I’d like to share the poem AND the one I was inspired to write immediately after reading it, and sent back to her in response…

A POEM TO MY GROWN-UP CHILD
Author: Unknown

My hands were busy through the day
I didn’t have much time to play
The little games you asked me to
I didn’t have much time for you.
I’d wash your clothes, I’d sew and cook,
But when you’d bring your picture book
And ask me please to share your fun or fears
I’d say “A little later dear.”
I’d tuck you in all safe at night
And hear your prayers, turn out the light
Then tiptoe softly out the door
I wish I’d stayed a minute more.

For life is short, the years rush past.
And little ones grow up so fast.
No longer are they at your side,
Their precious secrets to confide.
The picture books are put away,
There are no longer games to play.
No good-night kiss, no prayers to hear,
That all belonged to yester-year.
My hands, once busy, now are still.
I wish I could go back and do
The little things you asked me to.

A POEM FROM A GROWN-UP CHILD TO HER MOTHER
by Jodi Murphy

When I was little we used to play
Together laughing almost every day.
But more than that, I’ll always remember,
is how you loved me oh so tender.
You’d cook, you’d clean, you’d care, you’d cuddle.
You were always there when I got into trouble.
In my heart, I knew you were the best.
It was hard to tell you, so I hoped you’d guess.

Well now I’m older and on my own.
To be together, we usually use the phone.
But my being grown, with responsibility
is sometimes harder than I make it seem.
I feel secure, and strong and free
and I really am who I want to be.
But I need you more now
Than I needed you then.
I need your love, your support, and I need a friend.
So if you think you’re not busy
and have nothing to do,
There’s a grown-up little girl
just waiting for you…

Hugs to all the moms out there…enjoy every precious moment of motherhood’s amazing journey. It’s both exciting and terrifying. : )
