The ottoman was introduced into Europe from Turkey in the late 18th century as an upholstered seat without a back. The Turks used it as a central piece of seating usually piled with cushions. Today, the ottoman is one of the most versatile pieces of furniture one can use in a design mix. It’s available in a multitude of shapes, sizes and styles and serves a variety of functions.
There’s no end to the creative ways an ottoman can be used…placing one in front of a sofa or sectional instead of a traditional coffee table softens the room and provides additional seating when entertaining. Place a wood or lacquer tray on top, and the ottoman easily transforms from seating to coffee table to accommodate drinks, books, or remotes. Use them at the foot of a bed to add color and texture, as well as function. Today, poufs…softer versions of the ottoman…are extremely popular because they interject a pop of personality into a room.
